Cheese boards are a great way to kick off a holiday gathering. Let’s face it — everyone loves cheese. On top of that, we love a good cheese board because it’s packed with calcium and probiotics that make your teeth stronger. If you’re prepping for a holiday get together, here are a few tips to help you make sure you have a great tasting cheese board that’s full of snacks and flavors that promote a healthy smile.

Start with Cheese

Let’s start with the star of the cheese board – the cheese! We’ve already covered that cheese is good for your teeth, but you have to know which cheeses are better for cavity prevention. Stick with cheese that’s not processed and doesn’t contains added sugar. For the ultimate cheese platter, we recommend aged cheese such as Cheddar or Monterey Jack. If you prefer soft cheeses, look for Brie of Camembert. Pick two or three of your favorites and anchor the cheese board.

Give it Crunch

Almonds are fantastic for the health of your teeth. They are a great source of calcium and protein, and low in sugar. Whole or sliced — almonds are a great way to add texture and crunch to the platter.

An Apple a Day

An apple a day keeps the dentist away. It’s also a great addition to a cheese board. Apples are high in fiber and water. And crunchy fruits like apples act as a natural cleanser for your teeth. Eating an apple produces saliva, rinsing away bacteria and food particles. Thinly slice the apples and arrange on the platter.

The Right Dried Fruit

Unlike some other dried fruits, raisins have been shown to fight tooth decay. Certain chemicals in raisins suppress the growth of cavity-causing oral bacteria. So don’t feel guilty filling decorative bowls or lining the edge of the board with these tasty sweets.

Go ahead and enjoy celebrations with friends and family. And enjoy the cheese board! But with all the festivities, don’t forget to maintain good oral health practices. Floss daily and brush at least twice a day.
