Coconut oil pulling has become one of the most popular methods when it comes to teeth whitening.

Celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow and Shailene Woodley swear by the trend. Essentially, coconut oil pulling is swishing a mouthful of oil around your mouth for about twenty minutes and then spitting it out. The word pulling refers to the theory of oil pulling bad bacteria off your teeth and out of your gums.

Why should you try this? The product is claimed to have anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial benefits. Other health benefits include drawing out toxins in your body, helping to cure headaches and improving overall health.

Here is quick instruction on how to successfully try coconut oil pulling:

Step 1: Put 1-2 teaspoons of coconut oil in your mouth

Step 2: Swish for 20 minutes. The coconut oil will get thicker the longer you swish.

Step 3: Spit oil into a trashcan and not a sink as the oil can wreak havoc on your drain.

Step 4: Rinse well with warm water. If you still have the taste in your mouth, you can rinse with warm salt water.

Step 5: Brush well to remove any remaining bacteria.

While some people have found a lot of success with coconut oil pulling, it’s not for everyone. Sometimes the coconut taste or the thick consistency is too hard for some to handle. However, we think the benefits out way the possibly unpleasant consistency. This unconventional method is definitely worth the try!
