Spring has sprung! The changing of seasons is an exciting time, for sure, but that doesn’t mean it comes without its challenges. Have you noticed any sneezing, sniffling or itchy red eyes from any of your kiddos? It could be springtime allergies, and they could affect their long-term development.

For kids still developing, allergies can be a major indicator or poor dental health. Blocked sinuses can impact the development of permanent teeth and jaw placement by decreasing their airways and complicating breathing.

Children with chronic nasal congestion maybe susceptible to malocclusion or misaligned teeth. Other symptoms of malocclusion are a runny or itchy nose, postnasal drip, itchy or watery eyes, redness of the eyes, sore throats sinus congestion and pain, headaches and fatigue. Chronic nasal congestion forces kids to breathe heavily and out their mouths. Crooked teeth that result from malocclusion can be corrected with orthodontic treatment, though this takes several rounds of treatment over the course of several years.

If you notice any of these symptoms in your children be sure to schedule an appointment with a dentist. But with any luck, you and your family will be able to enjoy spring allergy free!
