5 Service Ideas for Next Week’s MLK Day of Service

Monday, January 9, 2017

It’s January, but the season of giving is not over.

Next week our country honors Martin Luther King Jr. for the contributions he has made to our great nation. What better way to honor him than by participating in the MLK Day of Service? To give you some time to plan and organize next week’s activities, we wanted to offer five suggestions for ways to help out your community. No matter how you contribute, know that you are making a change in someone else’s life.

1. Hygiene Kits for the Homeless: These can be completed with travel size amenities from the dollar store, or samples from your last hotel visit. Many homeless struggle with basic necessities like brushing their teeth or washing their hands. The more kits the better!

2. Community Gardens: We all have a green thumb in us. You can work with your community to adopt a small piece of land or revitalize an existing public space. Plant vegetables or fruits and monitor them year round. Projects like these can last a lifetime!

3. Care for our Service Men & Women: Work with a group to compile care packages for our Service Men & Women. These can include snacks, personal items, and are best with a personal card of gratitude. Check out organizations like Give 2 The Troops or Operation Gratitude (Click here for a link to ‘Give 2 the Troops’) to find out how to best send care.

4. Help out the Elderly: Maybe you have an older family member, neighbor or friend who needs help with some yard work. Check with your local senior citizens center to see if they need leaves raked, snow shoveled or furniture moved.

5. Park Cleanup: Go to your local park and pick up trash or sweep unkempt areas. Not only will you beautify an area for others, but you’ll feel great doing it!
