Experience the transformative power of our custom dental crowns at Bright Now Dental. These specialized restorations effectively repair broken, chipped, or severely decayed teeth, restoring both function and aesthetics.

How Dental Crowns Work

Dental crowns, also known as “caps,” are comprehensive restorations that encompass and encase the entire visible portion of a tooth above the gumline. By providing coverage and support, dental crowns evenly distribute biting and chewing forces, protecting weakened or damaged teeth from further harm. They effectively safeguard compromised tooth structures, preventing potential complications.

Types of Dental Crowns

Metal Crowns
Metal or metal alloy crowns, such as gold or stainless steel, are utilized for their specific advantages. Gold crowns are particularly suitable for posterior teeth exposed to heavy chewing forces, while stainless steel crowns serve temporary purposes or restore primary (baby) teeth.

Porcelain Crowns
Porcelain or ceramic crowns, resembling natural teeth in color, offer excellent aesthetic results. Similar to white fillings, these tooth-colored crowns not only provide protection but also blend seamlessly with your smile.

PFM Crowns
Porcelain fused to metal (PFM) crowns combine the strength of metal with the cosmetic appeal of porcelain. This type of crown is often recommended for load-bearing teeth that are visible when you smile.

Indications for Dental Crowns

Dental crowns serve a dual purpose, providing both tooth protection and addressing significant aesthetic concerns. Our dentists may recommend a dental crown in the following situations:

• After root canal treatment
• For severe tooth discoloration unresponsive to whitening products
• To address extensive tooth decay
• For severely cracked or chipped enamel
• To replace large, old metal fillings
• As part of dental implant restorations

Whether you require treatment for a cracked tooth or desire to enhance your smile, options like porcelain or ceramic crowns offer durability and exceptional aesthetic appeal. Our dentists will meticulously match the crown color to your existing teeth, ensuring a natural and attractive outcome. With the added reinforcement of a durable crown, you can confidently smile and enjoy your favorite foods once again.

<h3class=”service-title-3″>Considerations for Dental Crowns

The benefits of dental crowns significantly outweigh any potential drawbacks. However, it is important to note that a crown may not be the most conservative treatment option when a more minimal restoration, such as a filling, is suitable. Additionally, post-treatment tenderness may be experienced due to the severity of tooth damage, trauma, or decay. If you encounter persistent sensitivity, our experienced dentists are available to evaluate the fit of the crown and make any necessary adjustments.

The Dental Crown Procedure at Bright Now Dental

The dental crown process typically involves two separate appointments, spaced approximately two to three weeks apart. During the initial visit, the tooth is numbed and prepared, which includes removing any cracked surfaces, areas of decay, or compromised enamel. This step is similar to receiving a dental filling, and you may experience minimal pressure.

Following tooth preparation, a scan or impression of your tooth is taken and sent to our lab. If necessary, color matching for the crown is also performed. While awaiting the permanent crown, a temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth and minimize sensitivity.

Approximately two weeks later, you return to our office for the placement of the permanent crown. The temporary crown is removed, and the permanent crown is tried in and adjusted as needed. Once the proper fit is achieved, a specialized bonding agent is used to securely attach the crown to your tooth.

Recovery and Care After Dental Crown Placement

Recovery after a dental crown procedure can vary among individuals. If a root canal was performed, the tooth is no longer vital, and no discomfort or irritation should be expected. However, if you had a large cavity or fracture, temporary tenderness of the tooth’s nerve may occur for a few days or up to a couple of weeks following the procedure. Rest assured that custom crowns provide optimal protection, and any discomfort during the recovery period is typically temporary. Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen, can be taken as needed.

Cost Considerations for Dental Crowns

Dental crowns play a crucial role in protecting weakened tooth structures and minimizing the risk of further damage or dental emergencies. While the cost of dental crowns is higher than that of fillings, it varies depending on the materials used. Factors such as aesthetics may influence the cost, as additional cosmetic materials and design may be required. The materials employed, such as metals, gold, or ceramics, impact the overall cost of your tooth restoration. To ensure transparency regarding pricing, our experienced dentists will discuss your options and help you select the most suitable one for your budget. Our OneSmile discount plan covers all of our dental crowns.

Dealing with a Damaged Crown

If your current dental crown feels loose, falls off, or becomes chipped, refrain from chewing on that side of your mouth and avoid sticky or crunchy foods. Contact our office as soon as possible to schedule an appointment. It is essential to have the crown replaced or reattached promptly to prevent exposure of the underlying tooth structure to bacteria or the development of new cavities.
