Nothing says summer quite like the 4th of July. It’s a celebration of our country, bringing together family and friends, and is the true kick-off to the summer season. This year, it’s time to create some new traditions or celebrate those long-standing ones. Here are some great ideas that are perfect for the entire family!

Go to a Parade

Nearly every city has a parade for the 4th of July. With extravagant floats and banners, to musicians and dance numbers, parades enthrall the crowd. But what sets an Independence Day parade apart from the many others is the veterans who also march, showing off their patriotism and giving parade-goers a chance to share their thanks for the service these men and women have provided.

Light Some Fireworks

Fireworks are a must-have for any 4th of July celebration. From sparklers to Roman candles, there’s something for everyone! However, it’s important to know your state and city laws, as many ban specific fireworks or require that you only set them off during certain hours. But once you know the rules, having a fun and safe 4th of July celebration is easy! Make sure you load up on your favorite fireworks soon before they’re gone!

Make Homemade Root Beer

When you think of the 4th of July, what’s the first drink you think of? Root Beer is one of the most popular drinks, and instead of buying a case from the store, why not make your own? It’s super easy to make and fun for the whole family. Even the little kids can get in on the action! What do you need?

• 5 gallons of cold water

• 5 pounds of white sugar

• 1 (2oz) bottle of root beer concentrate

• 5 pounds of dry ice

Place 4 gallons of water in a large container. Add the sugar and stir until it dissolves before you add the root beer extract. Mix well and then add the dry ice. Place a lid loosely over the container so the gas can escape. Let it “brew” for 15 minutes, add the last gallon of water, and let it brew for an additional 15 minutes before enjoying!

Barbeque

No 4th of July celebration is complete without a backyard barbeque. Whether you’re serving hot dogs and hamburgers or ribs and tri-tip, everything is better when it’s grilled. Make your grilling session a potluck style, where your guests bring a side dish, drinks, or dessert to cut down on costs. Kick your barbeque session up a notch and add healthy chicken or veggie kebabs, or keep it classic and add some brats to the menu.

Have a Block Party

Block parties are a fun way to build a community in your neighborhood. Often during block parties, various houses are responsible for food, and the others provide drinks. Kids can have water balloon fights, squirt gun wars, and so much more. For those neighborhoods without a lot of kids, a live band is a great way to celebrate and get together.
