For some, Memorial Day is the perfect opportunity to go on a quick vacation, thanks to the three-day weekend. For others, it’s a time to celebrate America and spend time with family and friends. No matter what your plans are this Memorial Day, it’s important to not break the bank. The worst thing that can happen is checking your bank account Tuesday morning and finding the balance less than satisfactory. Here are some fun ideas to celebrate Memorial Day without spending a small fortune.

ATTEND A LOCAL EVENT

In nearly every city, there’s a good chance that there will be some event going on. From a small fair to a carnival or even a barbeque at a friend’s house, these events are usually free to attend or have a very small entry fee. Try checking a local newspaper or go online to see if there are any events happening for you to attend. Ask friends and family, too! They may know of some private events taking place over the extended weekend.

BEACH PARTY

With summer right around the corner, the weather should be nearly perfect. Consider making Memorial Day a beach day. Many beaches have fire pits where you can barbeque food, make s’mores, and more. Keep it budget friendly and have all guests bring something to share, like burgers, drinks, or snacks. Make sure everyone can go by creating a Facebook group or event, and for those not on social media, a phone call is always nice.

STAYCATION

Sometimes traveling just isn’t in the budget. You either have enough money to pay for a hotel room or for the flights. Not both. While a weekend getaway somewhere local may be appealing, it could be nice to explore your hometown. Staycations can do wonders to rejuvenate you before it’s time to go back to work or school. Check out nearby tourist attractions; try a new restaurant; stay in your pajamas all day and watch good movies. However you do your staycation, enjoy it!
