Put Your Best Fork Forward

We hope that this March you have been putting your best foot forward!
You’re doing better than ever at work, you’ve finally trained your 2-year old lab mix to chew and his bone rather than your favorite pair of pleather shoes, and your dentist gave you a high-five for keeping up your stringent brushing and flossing routine. Good for you! But, what about your diet? Yes, that pesky diet!
What began as a weeklong National Nutrition Week in March 1973, National Nutrition Month is now an annual month-long campaign to address the public’s growing interest in public health and nutrition. This month, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics brings us National Nutrition Month to raise awareness about the importance of making smart food choices and developing healthy eating habits. This year’s 2017 theme: Put Your Best Fork Forward reminds us that we are each responsible for making healthy choices.
Fruits and vegetables are one of the easiest ways to start making smarter choices. We only eat so many calories within a day, so it is important that your calories ‘count’ in the right way. Look for foods that are packed with vitamins, minerals and plenty of fiber. When it comes to protein, you can put your best fork forward with lean meats, fish, poultry, nuts and beans. Spice these up with other vegetables and be wary of how much sodium you add. If you need a morning bowl of cereal, look for healthy whole-grain alternatives.
Most of all, eat a variety of foods in smaller portions all throughout the day. You work hard, so make sure you have plenty of energy. Although they tend to be quick and easy, large, fast food type meals with high sugar or calorie contents set your body up for a crash. Steer clear!
Keep up the good work, and remember with everything going on in your life, taking care of yourself and the ones you love with good, nutritional foods is most important this month, and every month!
