Send Your Kids Back to School with a Healthy Smile

The new school year is almost here, and while the summer months offered more time for your kids to take care of their teeth, the mad rush of the start of the school year may see your child’s oral health take a back seat. Make sure to send your kids to school with the right plan to keep their teeth in top health.
Dental Visit
Before you send your kids off to school, schedule a visit with your family dentist to make sure their oral health is in top form. Be sure to ask about the best ways to fight cavities and keep their teeth clean. Want to go a step further? Ask your dentist about fluoride treatments and sealants to prevent tooth decay.
Snacks
A dental cleaning and exam are a good first step to ensuring your kids have the best oral health plan for the start of the new school year. However, what they eat will also contribute to their oral health. Don’t send them off with overly sugary snacks, chips, or crackers. Instead, try nuts, veggies, and cheese. Swap juices and soda for milk or water, and your child will have a happy, healthy mouth.
Brushing and Flossing
While your kids are eating the right things at school, when it comes to proper at-home hygiene like brushing and flossing regularly, set up a schedule or calendar to remind your kids when to brush. Create a sticker calendar where your kids can mark off the days they’ve brushed and flossed. Motivate them by letting them pick out a new toothbrush or by playing their favorite two-minute songs. And for flossing, instead of string floss, give them kid-friendly flossers that make it easier and more comfortable for them to floss regularly.
