What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are the preferred solution for any adult who needs to replace missing teeth. They are small, artificial tooth roots made out of durable and bio-compatible titanium to which an abutment is attached in able to place a crown or tooth. Compared to traditional bridges or dentures, implants are the only teeth replacement option that’s designed to mirror the shape and performance of your natural teeth.

It’s also important to note that implants are non-invasive to your surrounding teeth so there’s no need to put crowns on otherwise healthy teeth which can lead to potential issues in the future. From single tooth replacements to full-mouth restorations, implants are the only modern-day tooth replacement that’s capable of lasting a lifetime.

Types of Dental Implants

Bright Now offers a variety of dental implant options and we’ll help you select the solution that’s best for you.

Single Implants

Single dental implants are ideal for patients missing one tooth or multiple teeth that aren’t next to each other.

Implant Bridges

If you have three or four teeth missing in a row, you may want to consider implant bridges. This type of implant supports two implants together with a fixed dental bridge.

Implant-supported Dentures (Snap-on Dentures)

Looking for a permanent alternative to wearing traditional dentures? This type of denture uses implants for support allowing you to snap your dentures in place. You no longer have to glue in your dentures and it will offer extra stability throughout the day and will ensure your bone density in your jaw remains in tact where the implants are placed. Our dentists will typically use 2 – 4 implants for each implant-supported denture.

What to Expect During a Dental Implant Procedure?

1. Initial Exam – Before the procedure, your implant dentist will need to examine your jaw and make sure it’s safe for you to receive an implant. They’ll take x-rays of your mouth to study the structure and strength of your jaw and the positioning of your teeth. In some cases, other preparatory procedures such as a sinus lift or bone graft may need to be performed before your implant surgery.

2. Implant placement – You will be put under local anesthesia before surgery and may offer other forms of anesthesia. After the implant site is numb, our dentists will create a small opening and place the implant directly into the bone. Your gums will be stitched closed around the implant and it will take around 3 to 6 months for your gums to heal. During this time, the jawbone will fuse with the implant through a process called osseointegration. After your gums have healed, the incisions will be reopened and a metal piece called an abutment is inserted. The gums will be stitched up again with the exposed abutment and a temporary crown will be attached to the abutment.

3. Placement of crown or denture – When your gums have fully healed again, your dentist will place the permanent crown (for single implants), bridge (for multiple missing teeth), or dentures (implant-supported dentures). And you have and very naturally looking and performing tooth (dental implant) that can last you a lifetime.

What is the Post-Procedure Care for Dental Implants?

After your dental implant procedure, we’ll provide you with detailed home care instructions on how to ensure a successful recovery. Most dental implant treatments are considered minimally invasive, so you can return to your normal schedule by the next business day. However, we do recommend a soft diet while your mouth heals.

Do Dental Implants Carry Any Risks?

Dental implants have the highest success rate of any dental restoration but the biggest risk to dental implants is gum infection. Make sure to keep your implants clean by brushing and flossing around them each day.

How Long Do Dental Implants Last?

Dental implants last a lifetime! After 10 -15 years, the crown may need to be changed, but the implant will last for the rest of your life.

Tips to Care for Your Dental Implants

Care for your implants the same way you would your natural teeth, which includes daily brushing, flossing, and regularly scheduled dental checkups.
