Clear Aligners

Clear aligners are orthodontic treatment appliances designed to slowly move misaligned teeth into their proper alignment. The treatment consists of a series of clear removable trays made of thin plastic and custom-fitted to your teeth. The trays are created using a 3D image or model of your mouth and are changed out every few weeks to gradually move teeth with constant, gentle pressure.

During clear aligner treatment, patients are responsible for wearing and changing out the aligners per their treatment plan. The aligners should be worn at least 22 hours a day but can be removed for eating and oral hygiene.

What kinds of orthodontic problems can clear aligners fix?

Clear aligners, especially those from Bright Now!’s Reveal® collection, can resolve a host of misalignment issues, including mild, moderate, and severe cases. Clear aligners are used to address orthodontic irregularities such as:

  • Open Bites. An open bite occurs when some of the teeth in one jaw do not meet the teeth on the other jaw. Open bites can contribute to TMJ pain and difficulties with speech.
  • Crowded Teeth. If teeth are larger than the jaw, the teeth can overlap and twist, overcrowding the jaw. One or several teeth may need to be removed for a clear aligner can be used to straighten the remaining teeth.
  • Crossbites. A crossbite occurs when the biting surface of one tooth hits against the inside of another tooth, potentially leading to premature tooth wear and bone loss.
  • Underbites. Underbites are a result of bottom teeth overlapping top teeth.
  • Gaps in teeth. Teeth with large spaces in between may be improperly spaced, leading to greater misalignment issues.
  • Crooked teeth. Not only can crooked teeth shift other teeth out of alignment, but they may also cause excessive or irregular wear on adjacent teeth or to the biting surfaces of opposing teeth.

Who is a good candidate for clear aligners?

Just about anyone is a good candidate for clear aligners, as long as you can wear the aligners for the requisite 20-22 hours a day, keep track of them, and keep them clean. Clear aligners are an especially appealing option for older teens or adults who want a straighter smile but want a more discrete alternative to braces.

Find out if clear aligners like Reveal are right for you by scheduling a consultation with one of Bright Now!’s orthodontists or trained dentists.

How do clear aligners work, and how do I use them?

The first step in your clear aligner treatment is creating the set of custom trays. A 3D image of your teeth and mouth is created using an intraoral scanner and used as a guide to both plan your treatment and shape your trays. In most cases, you will receive the entire set of aligners needed for your treatment at one time. Your unique treatment plan will outline how frequently you will need to change out the aligners—usually about every two weeks—which ones to switch them to, how often you’ll need to visit the office for a checkup—about every six weeks, on average—and the estimated duration of your treatment.

Each aligner is specifically designed to move your teeth a fraction of a millimeter of a time through constant, gradual pressure, but they can only work if you keep them in. While they can be removed to eat, drink, or brush your teeth, you’ll need to wear your aligners for 20-22 hours a day for optimal results.

What are the benefits of Clear Aligners?

Clear aligners are a discreet alternative to metal braces, boasting the same level of efficacy with more comfort and convenience. Reveal® aligners in particular feature an innovative scalloped design that makes them fit more snugly and more comfortably for even better results, and they are made using an advanced BPA- and phthalate-free plastic material that resists stains and the “cloudy” effect of other brands.

In addition, while most clear aligner treatment is orthodontist-directed, Reveal® clear aligners can be directed by a trained dentist like those at Bright Now!, making it even easier and more convenient to get exceptional orthodontic care.

Clear aligner technology has also come a long way, expanding the type, complexity, and severity of cases that can be treated using clear aligners. With Express, Lite, and Standard treatment options, Reveal® clear aligners can be used to address nearly any degree of misalignment, including moderate and severe.

How long is clear aligner treatment?

Just like with other orthodontic treatments, clear aligner treatment is unique to every patient and determined by the severity of the misalignment. The average treatment time can range from 6 months for patients who need slight readjustments to 18 months for more complex cases. The duration of your treatment time can also depend on how you wear your aligners; wearing them improperly, not changing them out, or not wearing them for 20-22 hours a day can slow progress and extend your treatment.

How much do clear aligners cost?

The cost of clear aligner treatment varies by brand and by treatment plan. Complex treatment plans that need more time, more aligners, and/or additional procedures or attachments will cost more than simpler cases. Different brands of clear aligners can also come at different price points. Invisalign® is among the most expensive options, with an average treatment cost of around $5,000+, while other brands like Reveal offer the same effectiveness and quality but at a more competitive price starting at around $2,300.

Many dental insurances will cover at least some portion of clear aligner treatment. You may also be able to use a Health Savings Account or Flexible Spending Account to help manage the cost of your treatment, or take advantage of convenient flexible payment plans and affordable financing like those offered at Bright Now!.
