Who Knew Honey Helps?!

Oh that sweet, syrupy goodness!
This month we take a look at honey; the delicious substance bees produce from nectar collection. There are over 300 honey varietals in the United States alone, each with its own color and flavor. A pound of honey may contain the nectar of more than two million flowers, so you know our buzzing little friends are working hard!
Bees sustain all types of life by performing much needed pollination. Nearly 1/3 of the average American diet comes from pollinated plants. Of those plants, honey bees take 80% responsibility. Without these little guys, who knows what we would do?
Thankfully, two forces joined together in 1989 to create a National Month for recognizing the importance of honey bees and honey. The National Honey Board and the US Department of Agriculture chose September as the designated month because the bulk of honey is harvested during this time.
Besides being nature’s sweetener, honey is a great source of natural energy. Full of carbohydrates, it’s perfect for that extra boost. Honey is also great for skin care, softening and moisturizing skin at the same time! If you are feeling the effects of a common cold or sore throat, honey can alleviate your symptoms as well. And no matter what you are cooking, try adding a touch of honey to sweeten it up.
