National Smile Day is celebrated around the world on October 2 thanks to Harvey Ball, a commercial artist who created the iconic, yellow smiley face in 1963. Harvey felt the commercialization of his smiley face was taking away from its original meaning, and so, National Smile Day was born. It’s a day devoted to being kind to one another, and of course, smiling.

Here are some ways to celebrate with your smile:

Spread the smiles. Make an extra effort to smile at the people you see today. The thing about smiles is that they’re contagious. The more smiles you give, the more you tend to receive.

Smile even when you’re by yourself. Studies show that the simple act of smiling can have a powerful psychological effect on your mood. In fact, it seems that smiling, even if forced, can actually cause real feelings of happiness.

Take care of your bright smile. People notice your teeth when you smile, so make sure they’re beaming. Visit your dentist at least once a year for a professional cleaning to remove surface stains. You can also ask your dentist about professional teeth whitening options that can quickly whiten your teeth, or braces or Invisalign for a straighter smile.
